i can't sleep anymore

I've always had sleep problems, dating back to my teenage years. Nothing crippling or anything; it used to be just an inability to fall asleep. That mostly went away in college.

When Maxine and I were living together five years ago, we had an insanely squeaky bed (so squeaky, in fact, that I had to warn our overnight guests about it, so they didn't think we were getting it on). I used to wake up every time I moved so that I wouldn't wake her up - and I still wake up before moving today. (Maxine and I still joke that the bed ruined our relationship.)

In 2005, I started working with a personal trainer, who pushed me to drink a gallon of water a day. That led to me getting up during the night to use the bathroom on a regular basis. But most of the time I'm able to kinda sorta stay asleep when I get up, you know what I mean?

Now, however, it's gone to a completely different level. I'll sleep for a few hours, and then I just wake up, and can't go back to sleep. This morning I woke up at 7:15, wide awake, six hours after I went to bed. The night before I fully woke up at 4:30 and just tossed and turned for two hours. I was able to doze for a little bit (and actually successfully fell asleep for an hour) but I was still up before nine.

Any suggestions? Do I need to see a doctor or something?

Do you have health insurance? If so, get to a doctor. I had some sleep issues that I kept blowing off until I was just so exhausted I could barely function. I had a sleep study done that showed I wake up about 20 times a night for no apparent reason. I got a sleep aide in the form of Hydroxyzine, which is an antihistamine that can also be used for anxiety/sleep pills. It just enables you to stay asleep all night - it's wonderful.

Want me to send you some Ambien? Or just drink until you pass out. That will work too.
